Approaches to communicating with a computer
- 3 things to know
- Component 1
Overview
Human-computer interaction, two directions of communication an interface must support and four contemporary approaches to communicating with a computer.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
State the two directions of communication an interface must support.
Why is the interface described as the boundary of a system?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Define human-computer interaction.
Model answer
Human-computer interaction is the study of how people communicate with computer systems. The field covers both the design of the interface and the behaviour of the user.
- 2
State the two directions of communication an interface must support.
Model answer
An interface must carry input from the user to the machine. The same interface must carry output back from the machine to the user.
- 3
Why is the interface described as the boundary of a system?
Model answer
The interface is everything the user can see and touch of the system. Whatever lies behind it is invisible to them.
- 4
Name four contemporary approaches to communicating with a computer.
Model answer
Contemporary approaches include the graphical interface, touch and gesture, speech, and biometric or sensor input. Text command entry remains in use as well.
- 5
What is a gesture-based interface?
Model answer
A gesture-based interface reads movement of the hand or body as a command. A camera or motion sensor supplies the input.
- 6
Give one advantage of a touch interface over a mouse.
Model answer
A touch interface puts the pointing device where the content is, so the action is direct. The user needs no separate hardware.
Other ways to work this

Every question in System Design and Human-Computer Interaction, on a schedule.
Attempt a question from memory, write the correct version, then attempt it again. Levo records the jump between your first attempt and your last, and brings each question back on the day you are due to forget it.
