Input devices and how data is captured
- 3 things to know
- Component 2
Overview
Input device, optical character recognition and optical mark recognition.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
How does a keyboard turn a key press into data?
How does an optical mouse detect movement?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is an input device?
Model answer
An input device converts a real-world action or quantity into data the computer can process. A keyboard and a temperature sensor are both input devices.
- 2
How does a keyboard turn a key press into data?
Model answer
A key press completes a circuit at one point in the key matrix. The keyboard controller converts that position into a character code such as ASCII.
- 3
How does an optical mouse detect movement?
Model answer
An optical mouse shines an LED or laser onto the surface and photographs it many times a second. The processor compares successive images to work out direction and distance.
- 4
How does a resistive touchscreen work?
Model answer
A resistive touchscreen has two conductive layers separated by a small gap. Pressure pushes the layers together and the contact point is read as a coordinate.
- 5
How does a capacitive touchscreen differ from a resistive one?
Model answer
A capacitive touchscreen senses the change in an electrostatic field caused by a finger. A capacitive screen supports multi-touch and is brighter, but a bare finger or special stylus is required.
- 6
What is a flatbed scanner used for, and how does it work?
Model answer
A flatbed scanner converts a paper document into a bitmap image. A moving light source and a row of sensors measure reflected light line by line.

What is inside Levo
Six ways to work the same material.
Every question in Input, Output and Secondary Storage, on a schedule.
Attempt a question from memory, write the correct version, then attempt it again. Levo records the jump between your first attempt and your last, and brings each question back on the day you are due to forget it.
