Indexed sequential access and multi-level indexes
- 3 things to know
- Component 2
Overview
Indexed sequential file, index in file terms and multi-level index.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
How is a record found in an indexed sequential file?
Give two advantages of indexed sequential organisation.
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is an indexed sequential file?
Model answer
An indexed sequential file stores records in key order and adds an index of key values. The index gives a starting point, so the whole file need not be read.
- 2
How is a record found in an indexed sequential file?
Model answer
The index is searched for the largest key that is not greater than the wanted key. The read then continues sequentially from the block that entry points to.
- 3
Give two advantages of indexed sequential organisation.
Model answer
Individual records can be found quickly through the index. The file can also still be processed sequentially in key order for batch runs.
- 4
Give two disadvantages of indexed sequential organisation.
Model answer
The index takes extra storage and must be updated whenever records are added or removed. Access is slower than true direct access, because the index must be searched first.
- 5
What is an index in file terms?
Model answer
An index is a table of key values paired with the addresses where those records are stored. Searching the small index is far quicker than searching the whole file.
- 6
What is a multi-level index?
Model answer
A multi-level index is an index of indexes, arranged as a hierarchy. A top-level entry points to a lower-level index, which finally points to the data.
