Questions from this subtopic

Each one with the model answer underneath.

  1. 1

    What is a linked list?

    Model answer

A linked list is a set of nodes in which each node holds data and a pointer to the next node. The nodes need not be adjacent in memory.

  2. 2

    Define the term node.

    Model answer

A node is one element of a linked list, holding a data field and a pointer field. The pointer field gives the location of the following node.

  3. 3

What is the start pointer of a linked list?

    Model answer

The start pointer holds the location of the first node in the list. An empty list has a start pointer set to null.

  4. 4

What marks the end of a linked list?

    Model answer

The last node holds a null pointer in place of an address. A traversal stops as soon as the null pointer is reached.

  5. 5

Describe how a new node is inserted into an ordered linked list.

    Model answer

The pointer of the node before the insertion point is changed to address the new node. The new node points at the node that used to follow.

  6. 6

Describe how a node is deleted from a linked list.

    Model answer

The pointer of the previous node is changed to address the node after the one removed. The deleted node is then returned to the free list.
