- 3 things to know
- Component 2
Overview
File backup, grandfather-father-son method and transaction log.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
What is a file backup?
Distinguish a full backup from an incremental backup.
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Why does a data file need security measures?
Model answer
A file can be lost through hardware failure, human error, malicious attack or fire. The data may be irreplaceable and is often legally protected.
- 2
What is a file backup?
Model answer
A backup is a copy of a file kept separately so the data can be restored after a loss. Backups are usually taken on a fixed schedule.
- 3
Distinguish a full backup from an incremental backup.
Model answer
A full backup copies every file, which is slow to take but simple to restore. An incremental backup copies only what has changed, which is quick but needs several sets to restore.
- 4
Why should backups be stored away from the computer they protect?
Model answer
A fire or flood at one site would destroy the original and any copy stored beside it. Off-site or cloud storage keeps the copy independent of that risk.
- 5
Explain the grandfather-father-son method.
Model answer
Three generations of a master file are kept, the newest called the son and the oldest the grandfather. Each new run creates a son, and the oldest generation is then reused.
- 6
Why are generations of files kept rather than a single backup?
Model answer
A fault may not be noticed until several runs later, by which time the newest copy is also wrong. Older generations allow recovery to a point before the fault appeared.

What is inside Levo
Six ways to work the same material.
Every question in Files, Records and File Organisation, on a schedule.
Attempt a question from memory, write the correct version, then attempt it again. Levo records the jump between your first attempt and your last, and brings each question back on the day you are due to forget it.
