Questions from this subtopic

Each one with the model answer underneath.

  1. 1

    What is a translation error?

    Model answer

A translation error is a fault detected by the translator, so no executable is produced. The programmer must correct the source and translate again.

  2. 2

    What is an execution error?

    Model answer

An execution error occurs while a successfully translated program is running. The program stops or behaves incorrectly part way through.

  3. 3

Give two examples of translation errors.

    Model answer

A misspelled keyword and a missing closing bracket are both translation errors. Assigning a value of the wrong type to a variable is a third.

  4. 4

Give two examples of execution errors.

    Model answer

Dividing by zero and reading past the end of an array are both execution errors. Opening a file that does not exist is a third.

  5. 5

Why can a program be free of translation errors and still fail when run?

    Model answer

The translator only checks grammar and meaning against the language rules. Faults that depend on the data supplied appear only when the program actually runs.

  6. 6

Explain why a stack overflow is an execution error.

    Model answer

A stack overflow happens when uncontrolled recursion exhausts the memory reserved for the stack. Depth of recursion depends on the data and cannot be known at translation.
