Density
- 3 things to know
- Component 1
Overview
Equation for density, defining every symbol and its unit, density of water in kg m⁻³ and in g cm⁻³ and how the density of a small irregular solid is measured.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Describe how the density of a regular solid such as a metal cube is measured in the laboratory.
An alloy is made from equal volumes of two metals of densities 2700 kg m⁻³ and 8900 kg m⁻³. Calculate the density of the alloy.
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Define density.
Model answer
Density is the mass of a substance per unit volume.
- 2
State the equation for density, defining every symbol and its unit.
Model answer
The equation is ρ = m/V, where ρ is density in kg m⁻³, m is mass in kg and V is volume in m³.
- 3
Express the unit of density in SI base units.
Model answer
Density has base units kg m⁻³.
- 4
State the density of water in kg m⁻³ and in g cm⁻³.
Model answer
Water has a density of about 1000 kg m⁻³. The same value expressed in the smaller units is 1.00 g cm⁻³.
- 5
A block of aluminium measures 5.00 cm by 4.00 cm by 2.00 cm and has a density of 2700 kg m⁻³. Calculate its mass.
Model answer
The volume is 0.0500 × 0.0400 × 0.0200 = 4.00 × 10⁻⁵ m³, so the mass is 2700 × 4.00 × 10⁻⁵ = 0.108 kg. Dividing 0.108 kg by 4.00 × 10⁻⁵ m³ returns 2700 kg m⁻³.
- 6
A steel sphere of radius 1.20 cm has a density of 7800 kg m⁻³. Calculate its mass.
Model answer
The volume is (4/3)π(0.0120)³ = 7.24 × 10⁻⁶ m³, so the mass is 7800 × 7.24 × 10⁻⁶ = 0.0565 kg, or 56.5 g. Dividing 0.0565 kg by 7.24 × 10⁻⁶ m³ returns 7800 kg m⁻³.
