Refraction of Light
Multimode dispersion and monomode fibres
- 3 things to know
- Component 3
Overview
Multimode dispersion and monomode fibre.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
What is a monomode fibre?
How does a monomode fibre overcome multimode dispersion?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is multimode dispersion?
Model answer
Multimode dispersion is the spreading of a pulse as it travels along a fibre, because light taking different paths arrives at different times.
- 2
Why do different paths take different times?
Model answer
A ray that reflects steeply travels a longer total distance than one close to the axis, so it arrives later even though both travel at the same speed.
- 3
What effect does multimode dispersion have on a pulse of light?
Model answer
The pulse arrives broadened and lower in amplitude than it started.
- 4
What is a monomode fibre?
Model answer
A monomode fibre has a core so narrow that light can travel along it by only one path, essentially straight down the axis.
- 5
Roughly how does the core diameter of a monomode fibre compare with that of a multimode fibre?
Model answer
It is very much smaller, of the order of a few micrometres against fifty or more for a multimode core.
- 6
How does a monomode fibre overcome multimode dispersion?
Model answer
With only one path available there is no spread of path lengths, so the pulse arrives with almost no broadening from that cause.
