Centre of gravity, stability and toppling
- 3 things to know
- Component 3
Overview
Stable and unstable equilibrium in a sporting balance and why a cyclist leans into a bend.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Why does a sprinter in the starting blocks lean forward with the weight ahead of the feet?
Explain in terms of moments why an object topples when its weight acts outside the base.
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Why does a high jumper using the Fosbury flop clear a bar higher than the centre of gravity reaches?
Model answer
The body arches so that the centre of gravity passes beneath the bar while each part of the body in turn passes above it.
- 2
State the condition for an object resting on a surface to remain stable.
Model answer
The object is stable as long as the vertical line of action of its weight falls within the area of its base of support. Once that line passes outside the base, the object topples.
- 3
Explain in terms of moments why an object topples when its weight acts outside the base.
Model answer
The weight then has a moment about the edge of the base that turns the object further over instead of back. The turning effect no longer opposes the tilt, so the motion continues.
- 4
Why does a rugby player in a scrum adopt a low, wide crouch?
Model answer
Lowering the centre of gravity and widening the base means the body must be tilted through a much larger angle before the weight line leaves the base. The player is therefore much harder to push over.
- 5
Explain why a judo player widens their stance when expecting to be pushed.
Model answer
A wider stance enlarges the base of support, so the line of action of the weight has further to travel before it passes outside it. A larger sideways displacement is then needed to unbalance them.
- 6
Why does a sprinter in the starting blocks lean forward with the weight ahead of the feet?
Model answer
The line of action of the weight is deliberately placed in front of the base, so the athlete is already falling forwards when the gun goes. The unbalanced turning effect gives an immediate forward acceleration.
