Electromagnetic Induction
The rotating coil and the a.c. generator
- 3 things to know
- Component 3
Overview
Recall questions on the construction and the role of slip rings, why rotating the coil induces an alternating electromotive force, the peak value NBAω, where in the rotation the emf is greatest and where zero, and why the emf is zero when the flux linkage is greatest.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
How is the alternating emf of a rotating coil taken off to an external circuit?
Why is the emf of a rotating coil greatest exactly where the flux linkage is zero?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Describe how the flux linkage of a coil changes as it rotates steadily in a uniform magnetic field.
Model answer
The flux linkage varies sinusoidally between a maximum one way and an equal maximum the other. It is greatest when the plane of the coil is at right angles to the field and zero when the plane contains the field.
- 2
In which position of a rotating coil is the induced emf greatest?
Model answer
The emf is greatest when the plane of the coil lies along the field, so the flux linkage is momentarily zero. That is the position where the flux linkage is changing fastest as the coil turns.
- 3
In which position of a rotating coil is the induced emf zero?
Model answer
The emf is zero when the plane of the coil is at right angles to the field, so the flux linkage is at its maximum. At a maximum the flux linkage is momentarily not changing.
- 4
Why is the emf of a rotating coil greatest exactly where the flux linkage is zero?
Model answer
The emf depends on the rate of change of flux linkage, not on the flux linkage itself. A sinusoidal flux linkage has its steepest gradient as it passes through zero.
- 5
How does the peak emf of a rotating coil depend on the flux density?
Model answer
The peak emf is directly proportional to the flux density. Doubling B doubles the flux linkage at every angle and so doubles its rate of change.
- 6
How does the peak emf of a rotating coil depend on the area of the coil?
Model answer
The peak emf is directly proportional to the area of the coil. A larger area gives a proportionately larger flux for the same field.
