Option B: Medical Physics

Ultrasound scanning and the Doppler technique

  • 3 things to know
  • Component 3

Overview

What an A-scan displays, what a B-scan displays and doppler equation used to measure blood flow with ultrasound.

What you need to know

Answer each one before you reveal it.

Your recallNot started
Key term

Why does the returning echo from a deep structure need more amplification than one from a shallow structure?

Key term

State the Doppler equation used to measure blood flow with ultrasound.

Key term

Give the equation used to find the depth of a reflecting boundary from the echo time in an ultrasound scan.

Questions from this subtopic

Each one with the model answer underneath.

  1. 1

    Describe what an A-scan displays.

    Model answer

An A-scan displays the amplitude of each returning echo against the time taken for it to arrive. It gives depth information along one line only, with no two-dimensional picture.

  2. 2

    Describe what a B-scan displays.

    Model answer

A B-scan displays each echo as a dot whose brightness represents the amplitude of that echo. Sweeping the beam or using an array of transducers builds up a two-dimensional cross-sectional image.

  3. 3

Give one clinical use of an A-scan.

    Model answer

An A-scan is used to measure the length of the eye before cataract surgery, so that the correct replacement lens can be chosen. It is well suited to accurate distance measurement along a single line.

  4. 4

Give one clinical use of a B-scan.

    Model answer

A B-scan is used to image a fetus during pregnancy, showing its position, size and development. It gives the two-dimensional picture that a shape assessment requires.

  5. 5

Give the equation used to find the depth of a reflecting boundary from the echo time in an ultrasound scan.

    Model answer

The depth is d = ct/2, where c is the speed of sound in the tissue in m s⁻¹ and t is the total time for the pulse to travel out and back in s. The factor of two accounts for the double journey.

  6. 6

An echo returns 40 μs after a pulse is transmitted into tissue where sound travels at 1540 m s⁻¹. Calculate the depth of the reflecting surface.

    Model answer

    d = ct/2 = 1540 × 40 × 10⁻⁶/2 = 0.0616/2 = 3.1 × 10⁻² m, or 3.1 cm. Working back, t = 2 × 0.0308/1540 = 4.0 × 10⁻⁵ s.
