Electric field strength and Coulomb's law
- 3 things to know
- Component 2
Overview
Recall questions on the definition of electric field strength as force per unit positive charge, Coulomb's law in its 1/4πε₀ form with the value of that constant, the inverse square behaviour, and worked force and field calculations.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
State the equation for the electric field strength at a distance r from a point charge in free space.
State the equation for the force on a charge placed in an electric field.
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Define electric field strength.
Model answer
Electric field strength at a point is the force per unit charge on a small positive test charge placed at that point.
- 2
In which two equivalent units may electric field strength be measured?
Model answer
Electric field strength is measured in N C⁻¹ or in V m⁻¹, and the two units are identical.
- 3
State Coulomb's law as an equation, defining every symbol and its unit.
Model answer
The law is F = (1/4πε₀)(Q₁Q₂/r²), where F is the force in newtons (N), Q₁ and Q₂ are the charges in coulombs (C), r is their separation in metres (m) and ε₀ is the permittivity of free space in F m⁻¹.
- 4
State the approximate value of the constant 1/4πε₀ and its unit.
Model answer
The constant 1/4πε₀ is about 9 × 10⁹ N m² C⁻². The same quantity is also written as 9 × 10⁹ F⁻¹ m.
- 5
Calculate the force between charges of 3.0 μC and 5.0 μC placed 0.20 m apart in air.
Model answer
The force is F = 9.0 × 10⁹ × (3.0 × 10⁻⁶ × 5.0 × 10⁻⁶) ÷ 0.20² = 3.4 N, and it is repulsive since both charges are positive. Substituting back, r = √(9.0 × 10⁹ × 1.5 × 10⁻¹¹ ÷ 3.375) = 0.20 m.
- 6
State the equation for the electric field strength at a distance r from a point charge in free space.
Model answer
The field strength is E = (1/4πε₀)(Q/r²), where E is in N C⁻¹, Q is the charge in coulombs and r is the distance in metres.
