Atomic energy levels
- 3 things to know
- Component 3
Overview
Energy level in an atom, ground state and excited state.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Why are the energy levels of an atom given negative values?
What is the ground state?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is meant by an energy level in an atom?
Model answer
An energy level is one of the discrete energies an electron in the atom is allowed to have.
- 2
Why are the energy levels of an atom given negative values?
Model answer
The zero of energy is taken as the electron being free and at rest outside the atom, so a bound electron has less energy than that.
- 3
What is the ground state?
Model answer
The ground state is the lowest energy level, in which the electron normally sits.
- 4
What is an excited state?
Model answer
An excited state is any energy level above the ground state, occupied only after the atom has absorbed energy.
- 5
How does a line in an emission spectrum arise?
Model answer
An electron falls from a higher energy level to a lower one and the difference in energy is emitted as a single photon.
- 6
Give the equation relating the photon energy to the two levels.
Model answer
hf = E₂ − E₁, where E₂ and E₁ are the energies of the upper and lower levels in joules.

Every question in Photons, on a schedule.
Attempt a question from memory, write the correct version, then attempt it again. Levo records the jump between your first attempt and your last, and brings each question back on the day you are due to forget it.
