Conservation of momentum in collisions
- 3 things to know
- Component 1
Overview
Principle of conservation of linear momentum, isolated system in the context of momentum and elastic collision.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Define an elastic collision.
Define an inelastic collision.
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
State the principle of conservation of linear momentum.
Model answer
The total linear momentum of a system of interacting bodies stays constant provided no resultant external force acts on the system.
- 2
Show how the principle of conservation of momentum follows from Newton's third law.
Model answer
During the interaction each body exerts an equal and opposite force on the other for exactly the same time, so the two impulses are equal and opposite and the momentum gained by one body is exactly the momentum lost by the other.
- 3
What is meant by an isolated system in the context of momentum?
Model answer
An isolated system is one on which no resultant external force acts, so that only the internal forces between its members can change the momentum of individual bodies.
- 4
Define an elastic collision.
Model answer
An elastic collision is one in which the total kinetic energy after the collision equals the total kinetic energy before it.
- 5
Define an inelastic collision.
Model answer
An inelastic collision is one in which some kinetic energy is converted to other forms, so the total kinetic energy afterwards is less than before.
- 6
Is momentum conserved in an inelastic collision? Justify the answer.
Model answer
Yes it is, because conservation of momentum depends only on the absence of an external resultant force and not on whether kinetic energy is preserved.
