Overview
Typical relative permittivity for a plastic film dielectric and relative permittivity of a vacuum.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
State the effect of inserting a dielectric between the plates of a vacuum-spaced capacitor.
By what factor is the capacitance increased when a dielectric is inserted?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is a dielectric?
Model answer
A dielectric is an insulating material placed between the plates of a capacitor.
- 2
State the effect of inserting a dielectric between the plates of a vacuum-spaced capacitor.
Model answer
Inserting a dielectric increases the capacitance of the capacitor.
- 3
By what factor is the capacitance increased when a dielectric is inserted?
Model answer
The capacitance is multiplied by the relative permittivity of the dielectric material.
- 4
Explain in terms of the molecules of the dielectric why the capacitance increases.
Model answer
The electric field polarises the molecules of the dielectric, so a layer of opposite charge appears on each face of it. That induced charge partly cancels the field of the plates, reducing the potential difference for the same stored charge and so raising Q/V.
- 5
What happens to the potential difference across an isolated charged capacitor when a dielectric is slid between its plates?
Model answer
The potential difference falls, because the charge is fixed while the capacitance has risen, and V = Q/C.
- 6
What happens to the charge on a capacitor kept connected to a battery when a dielectric is inserted?
Model answer
More charge flows onto the plates, because the potential difference is held at the battery's value and Q = CV rises with the increased capacitance.
