Pumping and the structure of a laser
- 3 things to know
- Component 3
Overview
Purpose of pumping, two ways in which a laser medium can be pumped and three essential parts of a laser.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Name two ways in which a laser medium can be pumped.
Why must pumping be continuous in a laser that operates continuously?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is pumping?
Model answer
Pumping is the supply of energy to the amplifying medium that raises atoms from the ground state to a higher energy level.
- 2
State the purpose of pumping.
Model answer
It produces and maintains the population inversion without which the medium would absorb rather than amplify.
- 3
Name two ways in which a laser medium can be pumped.
Model answer
Optically, using a bright flash lamp or another laser, and electrically, by passing a current or a discharge through the medium.
- 4
Why must pumping be continuous in a laser that operates continuously?
Model answer
Atoms are constantly returning to the ground state as they lase, so the inversion must be replenished as fast as it is used.
- 5
Name the three essential parts of a laser.
Model answer
An amplifying medium, a pumping mechanism, and an optical cavity formed by two mirrors.
- 6
What is the amplifying medium?
Model answer
The material whose atoms are inverted and in which stimulated emission takes place, which may be a gas, a solid crystal or a semiconductor.
