Demonstrating the photoelectric effect
- 3 things to know
- Component 3
Overview
Photoelectric effect, observed if the electroscope is charged positively instead and threshold frequency.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
What is the photoelectric effect?
Describe how the photoelectric effect can be demonstrated with a gold leaf electroscope.
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is the photoelectric effect?
Model answer
The photoelectric effect is the emission of electrons from a metal surface when electromagnetic radiation of sufficiently high frequency falls on it.
- 2
Describe how the photoelectric effect can be demonstrated with a gold leaf electroscope.
Model answer
A clean zinc plate on a negatively charged electroscope is illuminated with ultraviolet radiation, and the leaf is seen to fall as electrons are emitted and the charge is lost.
- 3
What is observed if the electroscope is charged positively instead?
Model answer
The leaf does not fall, because any electrons emitted are attracted straight back to the positively charged plate.
- 4
Why must the zinc plate be freshly cleaned?
Model answer
A layer of oxide or grease on the surface absorbs the ultraviolet and prevents the electrons escaping.
- 5
What is observed when visible light of any intensity is used instead of ultraviolet?
Model answer
Nothing happens, however bright the light and however long it shines.
- 6
Define the threshold frequency.
Model answer
The threshold frequency is the minimum frequency of radiation that will cause photoelectric emission from a given metal.
