Antiparticles, annihilation and their symbols
- 3 things to know
- Component 3
Overview
Antiparticle of the electron called, charge of the anti-up quark and of the anti-down quark and antiparticle of the electron neutrino.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
What is an antiparticle?
How is the antiparticle of a quark written?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is an antiparticle?
Model answer
An antiparticle is a partner to a particle with exactly the same mass but the opposite sign of charge. Every particle has one.
- 2
In what respects is an antiparticle identical to its particle?
Model answer
It has exactly the same mass and the same magnitude of charge. Every property matches apart from the signs of the charge and of quantities such as lepton or baryon number.
- 3
What is the antiparticle of the electron called, and what is its symbol?
Model answer
It is the positron, written e⁺. It has the mass of an electron and a charge of +e.
- 4
How is the antiparticle of a quark written?
Model answer
A bar is placed over the quark symbol, so the anti-up quark is ū and the anti-down quark is d̄. The bar signals that every sign is reversed.
- 5
State the charge of the anti-up quark and of the anti-down quark.
Model answer
The anti-up quark carries −2/3 e and the anti-down quark carries +1/3 e. Each is the exact opposite of the corresponding quark.
- 6
How is an antiproton written, and what charge does it carry?
Model answer
It is written p̄ and carries a charge of −e. It is built from two anti-up quarks and an anti-down quark.
