Fuel cells, thermal conduction and insulation
- 3 things to know
- Component 3
Overview
What happens at the anode of a hydrogen fuel cell, what happens at the cathode of a hydrogen fuel cell and two practical difficulties with using hydrogen as a fuel.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Give the thermal conduction equation and define each symbol.
Give the equation for the rate of heat loss through a surface in terms of its U-value.
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Describe what happens at the anode of a hydrogen fuel cell.
Model answer
Hydrogen is fed to the anode, where a catalyst helps each molecule split into two protons and two electrons. The protons pass into the electrolyte and the electrons are forced into the external circuit.
- 2
Describe what happens at the cathode of a hydrogen fuel cell.
Model answer
Oxygen from the air arrives at the cathode and combines there with the protons that have crossed the electrolyte and the electrons returning through the circuit. The product is water, so the overall reaction of the cell is 2H₂ + O₂ → 2H₂O.
- 3
Why must the electrolyte of a fuel cell conduct ions but not electrons?
Model answer
If electrons could cross the electrolyte directly they would short out the cell internally and no current would flow in the external circuit. Blocking them forces the electrons round the external circuit, and that is where the useful energy is delivered.
- 4
State two advantages of a hydrogen fuel cell over a petrol engine for a vehicle.
Model answer
The only emission at the point of use is water, so there is no carbon dioxide, no oxides of nitrogen and no particulate matter released where people are. The cell is also quieter and typically more efficient, because it converts chemical energy straight into electrical energy rather than through a heat engine.
- 5
Explain why a fuel cell can exceed the efficiency of a heat engine burning the same fuel.
Model answer
A heat engine is limited by the temperatures between which it works, since only part of the thermal energy supplied can become useful work. A fuel cell converts chemical energy directly into electrical energy without an intermediate hot working fluid, so that limit does not apply to it.
- 6
Explain why the greenhouse gas saving from a hydrogen fuel cell depends on how the hydrogen was made.
Model answer
Hydrogen is not a source of energy but a way of carrying it, and it must be manufactured. Producing it by steam reforming of natural gas releases carbon dioxide upstream, whereas electrolysis powered by renewable electricity releases none.
