How Science Works
Correlation and causation
- 3 things to know
- All three components
Overview
Correlation between two variables, why a correlation on its own cannot establish causation and confounding variable.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Name four kinds of evidence that raise a correlation towards a causal claim.
Explain why the correlation between atmospheric carbon dioxide and global mean temperature is treated as more than an association.
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is a correlation between two variables?
Model answer
A correlation is a statistical association, so that when one variable changes the other tends to change with it. The association may be positive, negative or non-linear.
- 2
What does it mean to say that one variable causes a change in another?
Model answer
It means that changing the first variable, with everything else held fixed, produces a change in the second. Causation is a claim about what happens when you intervene, not merely about what varies alongside what.
- 3
Explain why a correlation on its own cannot establish causation.
Model answer
The same pattern arises if both variables are driven by a third factor, if the causation runs the other way, or if the association is a coincidence in a small data set. The correlation itself cannot distinguish between these possibilities.
- 4
What is a confounding variable?
Model answer
A confounding variable is a third quantity that influences both of the variables being compared. It creates an association between them even when neither affects the other.
- 5
Give an example of a correlation that arises because both quantities changed over the same period.
Model answer
The number of mobile phones in use and the mean global temperature both rose steadily over several decades, giving a strong correlation. Neither causes the other, and both are consequences of industrial and economic growth over time.
- 6
Name four kinds of evidence that raise a correlation towards a causal claim.
Model answer
A controlled experiment in which only the suspected cause is changed, a plausible physical mechanism, a dose-response relationship in which more of the cause gives more of the effect, and independent reproduction of the result all strengthen the case. The cause must also precede the effect in time.

Every question in How Science Works, on a schedule.
Attempt a question from memory, write the correct version, then attempt it again. Levo records the jump between your first attempt and your last, and brings each question back on the day you are due to forget it.
