Moments and the principle of moments
- 3 things to know
- Component 1
Overview
Turning effect of a force, moment of a force about a point and principle of moments.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Describe how the principle of moments is used to determine an unknown mass with a metre rule.
Why is a long-handled spanner easier to use than a short one on a stiff bolt?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is meant by the turning effect of a force?
Model answer
The turning effect of a force is its tendency to rotate a body about a pivot, and it is measured by the moment of that force.
- 2
Define the moment of a force about a point.
Model answer
The moment of a force about a point is the force multiplied by the perpendicular distance from that point to the line of action of the force.
- 3
State the unit of a moment and explain why it is not called a joule.
Model answer
A moment is measured in newton metres, N m, and although that has the same base units as the joule, a moment is a turning effect and not an energy, so the two are kept distinct.
- 4
Why must the distance used in a moment be the perpendicular distance?
Model answer
Only the component of the force at right angles to the line joining the pivot turns the body, and using the perpendicular distance accounts for that automatically.
- 5
State the principle of moments.
Model answer
For a body in equilibrium, the sum of the clockwise moments about any point equals the sum of the anticlockwise moments about that same point.
- 6
A force of 15 N acts at the end of a spanner 0.24 m from the bolt, at right angles to the spanner. Calculate the moment about the bolt.
Model answer
The moment is 15 × 0.24 = 3.6 N m. Dividing 3.6 N m by 0.24 m returns the 15 N force.
