High temperature superconductors and their uses
- 3 things to know
- Component 2
Overview
High temperature superconductor, boiling point of nitrogen in degrees Celsius and in kelvin and two applications of superconductors.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Why is a transition temperature above 77 K such an important threshold?
Give an approximate transition temperature for a ceramic high temperature superconductor.
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is meant by a high temperature superconductor?
Model answer
A high temperature superconductor is a material whose transition temperature lies above the boiling point of liquid nitrogen.
- 2
State the boiling point of nitrogen in degrees Celsius and in kelvin.
Model answer
Nitrogen boils at about −196 °C, or about 77 K. Adding 273.15 to −196 °C returns 77 K.
- 3
Why is a transition temperature above 77 K such an important threshold?
Model answer
Above 77 K the material can be kept superconducting with liquid nitrogen. Liquid nitrogen is far cheaper, more plentiful and easier to handle than liquid helium.
- 4
Give an approximate transition temperature for a ceramic high temperature superconductor.
Model answer
Ceramic oxide superconductors typically have transition temperatures around 90 K to 140 K.
- 5
Name two applications of superconductors.
Model answer
Superconductors are used in the magnets of MRI scanners and in the magnets of particle accelerators.
- 6
Why are superconducting magnets used in an MRI scanner?
Model answer
The scanner needs a very strong and extremely steady magnetic field over a large volume, and a superconducting coil can carry the necessary current indefinitely without dissipating power.
