X-ray imaging, fluoroscopy and radiography
- 3 things to know
- Component 3
Overview
Purpose of an intensifying screen in film radiography and two types of digital image receptor used in radiography.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Why is a contrast medium given to a patient before some X-ray examinations?
Name two contrast media used in X-ray imaging and state where each is used.
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Why are low energy X-rays used for diagnosis rather than high energy ones?
Model answer
Lower energy photons are absorbed differently by bone and soft tissue, which produces the contrast an image needs. High energy photons pass through almost everything equally and would give a uniformly grey image.
- 2
Why are high energy X-rays used in radiotherapy?
Model answer
High energy photons penetrate deeply, so they can deliver a dose to a tumour well below the skin surface. They also deposit relatively less energy in the overlying skin.
- 3
How is the dose to healthy tissue kept low when a deep tumour is treated with X-rays?
Model answer
The beam is rotated about the patient so that it always passes through the tumour but enters through a different path each time. The tumour therefore receives the full dose while each region of surrounding tissue receives only a fraction of it.
- 4
Why is a contrast medium given to a patient before some X-ray examinations?
Model answer
Soft tissues and body fluids have similar attenuation coefficients, so they show almost no contrast on a plain image. A substance of high atomic number placed in the organ absorbs strongly and makes its outline visible.
- 5
Name two contrast media used in X-ray imaging and state where each is used.
Model answer
Barium sulfate is swallowed or given as an enema to outline the digestive tract. An iodine-based compound is injected into the bloodstream to show blood vessels and the kidneys.
- 6
What is fluoroscopy?
Model answer
Fluoroscopy is the production of a continuous, real time X-ray image on a screen using a low intensity beam. It allows a clinician to watch movement, such as a swallow or a catheter being guided.
