Moment of inertia
- 3 things to know
- Component 3
Overview
Recall questions on what moment of inertia measures and why it depends on how the mass is distributed rather than only on its amount, the unit, comparing two bodies of equal mass, the rotational analogue of Newton's second law, and rotational kinetic energy.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Give the unit of moment of inertia.
Express the moment of inertia of a body as a sum over its particles.
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is meant by the moment of inertia of a body?
Model answer
The moment of inertia is a measure of how hard it is to change the rotational motion of a body about a given axis. It plays the same role in rotation that mass plays in linear motion.
- 2
Give the unit of moment of inertia.
Model answer
The unit of moment of inertia is kg m².
- 3
On what two things does the moment of inertia of a body depend?
Model answer
It depends on the total mass of the body and on how that mass is distributed relative to the axis of rotation. Mass placed further from the axis contributes far more.
- 4
Express the moment of inertia of a body as a sum over its particles.
Model answer
The moment of inertia is I = Σmr², where each small mass m is at perpendicular distance r from the axis. The distance is squared, so distant mass dominates the total.
- 5
Why does the same object have different moments of inertia about different axes?
Model answer
The perpendicular distance of each part of the body from the axis changes when the axis is moved. Since each contribution depends on the square of that distance, the sum comes out different.
- 6
Give the moment of inertia of a solid sphere about an axis through its centre.
Model answer
The moment of inertia is I = (2/5)mr², where m is the mass in kg and r is the radius in m.
