Potential difference round a circuit and conservation of energy
- 3 things to know
- Component 2
Overview
Recall questions on the sum of potential differences round a loop, why it equals the electromotive force, the link to conservation of energy, and worked problems finding a missing potential difference in a series or a multi-loop circuit.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
State the rule for potential differences across components connected in parallel.
Two identical lamps in series are connected to a 6.0 V battery. State the potential difference across each.
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
State the rule relating the potential differences across components in series to the supply potential difference.
Model answer
The sum of the potential differences across the components in series equals the potential difference across the supply.
- 2
Which conservation law does the series potential difference rule follow from?
Model answer
It follows from the conservation of energy.
- 3
Explain how conservation of energy leads to the series potential difference rule.
Model answer
Every coulomb of charge given a certain amount of energy by the supply must give up all of that energy by the time it has returned, and the energy it loses at each component in turn is that component's potential difference.
- 4
State the rule for potential differences across components connected in parallel.
Model answer
Components connected in parallel all have the same potential difference across them.
- 5
Why do components in parallel share the same potential difference?
Model answer
Their ends are joined to the same two points in the circuit, so the change in potential from one end to the other is the same for each.
- 6
A 12 V supply drives a series circuit in which one resistor has 4.8 V across it. Calculate the potential difference across the rest of the circuit.
Model answer
The remainder takes 12 − 4.8 = 7.2 V. Adding 7.2 V to 4.8 V returns the 12 V supply.
