Mathematical Requirements (Appendix C)
Mathematical Requirements (Appendix C)
Radians, small angles, areas and volumes
- 3 things to know
- All three components
Overview
Recall questions on the radian and converting to and from degrees, the small angle approximations and when they hold, arc length and the area of a sector, the surface areas and volumes of a sphere and a cylinder, and where each appears in physics.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Show that the small angle approximation is good for an angle of 5°.
Where does the small angle approximation enter the fringe separation formula?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
When may the small angle approximation sin θ ≈ θ be used, and what must θ be measured in?
Model answer
It may be used when the angle is small, below about one tenth of a radian, and the angle must be in radians for the approximation to hold.
- 2
Convert 30° into radians.
Model answer
Multiplying by π/180 gives 30 × π/180 = 0.524 rad. Working back, 0.524 × 180/π = 30.0°.
- 3
Convert 1.20 rad into degrees.
Model answer
Multiplying by 180/π gives 1.20 × 57.3 = 68.8°. Working back, 68.8 × π/180 = 1.20 rad.
- 4
Why must an angle be in radians when angular velocity is used in ω = 2πf?
Model answer
The radian is defined as a ratio of two lengths, so it is dimensionless and the relationship between arc length and angle is simply s = rθ. Using degrees would introduce a conversion factor into every such formula.
- 5
State the small angle approximations used in physics and the condition for them.
Model answer
For small θ measured in radians, sin θ ≈ θ, tan θ ≈ θ and cos θ ≈ 1. They are usable when θ is below roughly 0.1 rad. Below that angle the error is under 1%.
- 6
Show that the small angle approximation is good for an angle of 5°.
Model answer
In radians 5° is 0.0873, and sin 0.0873 = 0.0872, a difference of about 0.1%. The approximation is therefore excellent at this angle.
