Coulomb repulsion in the plum pudding and Rutherford models

  • 3 things to know

Overview

Recall questions on what each model predicted for alpha scattering, what was actually observed and what each observation implied, why a large-angle deflection rules out a diffuse positive charge, and estimating the nuclear size from the distance of closest approach.

Questions from this subtopic

Each one with the model answer underneath.

  1. 1

State the equation for the electrostatic force between two point charges, defining each symbol and its unit.

    Model answer

The force is F = Q₁Q₂/(4πε₀r²). Q₁ and Q₂ are the charges in C, r is their separation in m, ε₀ is the permittivity of free space in F m⁻¹ and F is the force in N.

  2. 2

What value is used for 1/(4πε₀) in an order-of-magnitude estimate?

    Model answer

The value 8.99 × 10⁹ N m² C⁻² is used, and 9 × 10⁹ N m² C⁻² is an acceptable approximation. It turns a product of charges divided by a squared distance into a force in N.

  3. 3

What charge does an α particle carry, in coulombs?

    Model answer

An α particle carries +2e. In coulombs that is +3.2 × 10⁻¹⁹ C. It contains two protons and has no electrons around it.

  4. 4

What charge does a gold nucleus carry, in coulombs?

    Model answer

    A gold nucleus holds 79 protons, so its charge is 79 × 1.60 × 10⁻¹⁹ C = 1.26 × 10⁻¹⁷ C. The charge is positive.

  5. 5

In estimating the maximum repulsion on the plum pudding model, what separation is used and why?

    Model answer

The radius of the whole atom, about 1.0 × 10⁻¹⁰ m, is used. On that model the positive charge fills the atom, so an α particle cannot get any closer to the whole of the charge than the atomic radius.

  6. 6

Calculate the maximum repulsive force on an α particle at the surface of a gold atom on the plum pudding model, taking the atomic radius as 1.0 × 10⁻¹⁰ m.

    Model answer

    F = 9 × 10⁹ × 3.2 × 10⁻¹⁹ × 1.26 × 10⁻¹⁷/(1.0 × 10⁻¹⁰)² = 3.6 × 10⁻⁶ N. Multiplying 3.6 × 10⁻⁶ N by (1.0 × 10⁻¹⁰ m)² and dividing by 9 × 10⁹ × 3.2 × 10⁻¹⁹ returns the gold charge of 1.26 × 10⁻¹⁷ C.
