Angular acceleration, torque and angular momentum
- 3 things to know
- Component 3
Overview
Angular acceleration and give its unit, rotational equivalent of Newton's second law and torque and give its unit.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
A spinning ice skater has a moment of inertia of 1.2 kg m² and turns at 4.0 revolutions per second. Calculate their angular momentum.
Define angular acceleration and give its unit.
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Define angular acceleration and give its unit.
Model answer
Angular acceleration is the rate of change of angular velocity, α = (ω₂ − ω₁)/t. Its unit is rad s⁻².
- 2
A gymnast's angular velocity rises from 2.0 rad s⁻¹ to 11.0 rad s⁻¹ in 0.60 s. Calculate the angular acceleration.
Model answer
α = (11.0 − 2.0)/0.60 = 9.0/0.60 = 15 rad s⁻². Working back, 2.0 + 15 × 0.60 = 11.0 rad s⁻¹.
- 3
State the rotational equivalent of Newton's second law.
Model answer
The relationship is τ = Iα, where τ is the resultant torque in N m, I is the moment of inertia in kg m² and α is the angular acceleration in rad s⁻².
- 4
Define torque and give its unit.
Model answer
Torque is the turning effect of a force about an axis, equal to the force multiplied by the perpendicular distance from the axis to its line of action. Its unit is N m.
- 5
A diver has a moment of inertia of 3.5 kg m² and experiences a torque of 52 N m. Calculate the angular acceleration produced.
Model answer
α = τ/I = 52/3.5 = 15 rad s⁻². Working back, 3.5 × 14.9 = 52 N m.
- 6
Define angular momentum and give its unit.
Model answer
Angular momentum is the product of moment of inertia and angular velocity, L = Iω. Its unit is kg m² s⁻¹.
