Circular Motion
Centripetal acceleration and centripetal force
- 3 things to know
- Component 1
Overview
Centripetal force on a body moving in a circle and why the passenger in a cornering car feels pushed outwards.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
State the two equations for centripetal force, defining each symbol and its unit.
Explain why the passenger in a cornering car feels pushed outwards, when the resultant force on them acts inwards.
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Why does a body moving at constant speed in a circle have an acceleration?
Model answer
Its direction of motion is continually changing, so the velocity changes even though the speed does not, and a changing velocity means an acceleration.
- 2
In which direction does the centripetal acceleration of a body in circular motion act?
Model answer
The centripetal acceleration is always directed towards the centre of the circular path.
- 3
State the two equations for centripetal acceleration, defining every symbol and its unit.
Model answer
They are a = v²/r and a = ω²r, where a is the acceleration in m s⁻², v is the linear speed in m s⁻¹, ω is the angular velocity in rad s⁻¹ and r is the radius in m.
- 4
Show that a = v²/r and a = ω²r are equivalent.
Model answer
Substituting v = rω into a = v²/r gives a = (rω)²/r = ω²r, so the two forms agree.
- 5
What is meant by the centripetal force on a body moving in a circle?
Model answer
The centripetal force is the resultant of all the forces acting on the body, and it is directed towards the centre of the circular path.
- 6
State the two equations for centripetal force, defining each symbol and its unit.
Model answer
They are F = mv²/r and F = mω²r, where F is the force in N, m is the mass in kg, v is the linear speed in m s⁻¹, ω is the angular velocity in rad s⁻¹ and r is the radius in m.
