Multimode optical fibres
- 3 things to know
- Component 3
Overview
Structure of a step index optical fibre, multimode fibre and purpose of the outer protective coating on a fibre.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
What is meant by a multimode fibre?
Calculate the critical angle at a core–cladding boundary where the core has a refractive index of 1.50 and the cladding 1.48.
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Describe the structure of a step index optical fibre.
Model answer
A core of glass of higher refractive index is surrounded by cladding of glass of lower refractive index, with a protective outer coating.
- 2
What keeps the light inside the core of an optical fibre?
Model answer
Total internal reflection at the boundary between the core and the cladding, which occurs because the core has the higher refractive index.
- 3
Why is cladding used rather than leaving the core surrounded by air?
Model answer
The cladding protects the surface from scratches and dirt that would let light escape, and it fixes the critical angle so the fibre's behaviour is predictable.
- 4
Why does the cladding have a refractive index only slightly lower than the core?
Model answer
It gives a large critical angle, so only rays close to the axis are guided and the spread of path lengths is limited.
- 5
What is meant by a multimode fibre?
Model answer
A multimode fibre has a core wide enough for light to travel along it by many different paths, or modes, at once.
- 6
Calculate the critical angle at a core–cladding boundary where the core has a refractive index of 1.50 and the cladding 1.48.
Model answer
sin C = 1.48 ÷ 1.50 = 0.987, so C is 80.6°.
