Nuclear Energy
Fission, fusion and the nuclear power debate
- 3 things to know
- Component 3
Overview
Nuclear fission, nuclear fusion and what a chain reaction is in a fission reactor.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Explain what a chain reaction is in a fission reactor.
What is nuclear fusion?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is nuclear fission?
Model answer
Nuclear fission is the splitting of a heavy nucleus into two lighter nuclei of comparable size, usually with two or three neutrons released as well. Energy is given out because the fragments are more tightly bound than the original nucleus.
- 2
What is nuclear fusion?
Model answer
Nuclear fusion is the joining of two light nuclei into a single heavier one. Energy is given out because the product is more tightly bound than the two nuclei that formed it.
- 3
Write a typical induced fission reaction for uranium-235.
Model answer
One example is ²³⁵₉₂U + ¹₀n → ¹⁴¹₅₆Ba + ⁹²₃₆Kr + 3 ¹₀n. The nucleon number totals 236 on each side and the charge totals 92 on each side.
- 4
Roughly how much energy is released in one fission of a uranium-235 nucleus?
Model answer
About 200 MeV is released in each fission. Nearly all of it appears as kinetic energy of the two fragments.
- 5
Write the deuterium–tritium fusion reaction.
Model answer
The reaction is ²₁H + ³₁H → ⁴₂He + ¹₀n. There are 5 nucleons and a total charge of +2e on each side.
- 6
How much energy does one deuterium–tritium fusion release?
Model answer
It releases about 17.6 MeV. That is far less per event than a fission, but far more per nucleon taking part.

Every question in Nuclear Energy, on a schedule.
Attempt a question from memory, write the correct version, then attempt it again. Levo records the jump between your first attempt and your last, and brings each question back on the day you are due to forget it.
