Electromagnetic Induction
Faraday's law and Lenz's law
- 3 things to know
- Component 3
Overview
Faraday's law of electromagnetic induction, lenz's law and unit of induced emf.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
What is the unit of induced emf, and how does it relate to the unit of flux linkage?
Why is the induced emf larger for a coil of many turns than for a single loop in the same changing field?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
State Faraday's law of electromagnetic induction.
Model answer
Faraday's law states that the magnitude of the induced emf equals the rate of change of flux linkage. A faster change of flux linkage gives a larger emf.
- 2
State Lenz's law.
Model answer
Lenz's law states that the direction of an induced current is always such as to oppose the change producing it. The induced effects always act to resist whatever is being done.
- 3
Write the two laws of induction as a single equation, and explain the minus sign.
Model answer
The two combine into induced emf = −d(NΦ)/dt. The minus sign expresses Lenz's law, showing that the emf drives a current whose own effects oppose the change of flux linkage.
- 4
Which conservation law does Lenz's law follow from?
Model answer
Lenz's law follows from the conservation of energy. If the induced effects assisted the change instead of opposing it, the change would grow of its own accord and energy would appear from nothing.
- 5
What is the unit of induced emf, and how does it relate to the unit of flux linkage?
Model answer
The induced emf is measured in volts. A rate of change of flux linkage of one weber turn per second gives one volt, so 1 V = 1 Wb s⁻¹.
- 6
A magnet is pushed north pole first into a coil. Which pole does the near face of the coil become?
Model answer
The near face becomes a north pole. The induced current flows in the sense that repels the approaching magnet and so opposes its motion.
