What Lasers covers

Lasers is examined in Component 3, Light, Nuclei and Options, Section A, which every student sits. It covers stimulated emission and coherence, population inversion, two, three and four level systems, pumping and the structure of a laser and the semiconductor laser and its uses.

Questions from this topic

Each one with the model answer underneath.

  1. 1

    What is stimulated emission?

    Model answer

Stimulated emission is the process in which a photon striking an already excited atom causes it to drop to a lower level and emit a second photon.

  2. 2

How does the emitted photon compare with the photon that caused the emission?

    Model answer

It has the same frequency, the same phase, the same direction of travel and the same polarisation.

  3. 3

    What is spontaneous emission?

    Model answer

Spontaneous emission is the process in which an excited atom drops to a lower level of its own accord and emits a photon in a random direction at a random time.

  4. 4

State the key difference between spontaneous and stimulated emission.

    Model answer

Spontaneous emission produces photons at random times and in random directions, while stimulated emission produces a photon matched exactly to the one that triggered it.

  5. 5

What condition must the incoming photon satisfy for stimulated emission to occur?

    Model answer

Its energy must equal the energy gap between the two levels, so that hf equals the difference in energy.

  6. 6

    Define coherent light.

    Model answer

Coherent light is light whose waves maintain a constant phase relationship with one another.

Lasers revision questions

What does Lasers cover in Eduqas A-Level Physics?
5 subtopics: stimulated emission and coherence, population inversion, two, three and four level systems, pumping and the structure of a laser and the semiconductor laser and its uses. Each one has its own page with questions and model answers.
How is Lasers organised?
By the Eduqas A420QS specification, subtopic by subtopic, so it matches the order you are taught it in.
