The Nature of Waves
Polarisation
- 3 things to know
- Component 3
Overview
Unpolarised light and why polarising sunglasses reduce glare.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Why can only a transverse wave be polarised?
What is unpolarised light?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Define polarisation.
Model answer
Polarisation is the restriction of the oscillations of a transverse wave to a single plane containing the direction of travel.
- 2
Why can only a transverse wave be polarised?
Model answer
Only a transverse wave has oscillations in more than one possible plane perpendicular to its travel, so only it can have them restricted to one.
- 3
What does the fact that light can be polarised prove about it?
Model answer
It proves that light is a transverse wave.
- 4
What is unpolarised light?
Model answer
Unpolarised light contains oscillations in every plane perpendicular to the direction of travel, all present at once.
- 5
Describe what happens when unpolarised light passes through a single polarising filter.
Model answer
Only the component of the oscillation in the filter's transmission plane passes, so the emerging light is plane polarised and its intensity is halved.
- 6
Describe what is observed when a second polarising filter is rotated behind the first.
Model answer
The transmitted intensity varies between a maximum when the two transmission planes are parallel and zero when they are at right angles.

Every question in The Nature of Waves, on a schedule.
Attempt a question from memory, write the correct version, then attempt it again. Levo records the jump between your first attempt and your last, and brings each question back on the day you are due to forget it.
