Quarks and leptons: the first generation
- 3 things to know
- Component 3
Overview
Two first-generation leptons and give their symbols, two first-generation quarks and give their symbols and charge of an up quark in coulombs.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
State the charge of the electron and of the electron neutrino in units of e.
State the charge of the up quark and of the down quark in units of e.
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What are the two families of fundamental particle that matter is built from?
Model answer
Matter is built from quarks and leptons. Both are taken to be fundamental, with no smaller parts inside them.
- 2
How many generations of quarks and leptons are there?
Model answer
There are three generations of each. The first generation makes up all ordinary stable matter.
- 3
Name the two first-generation leptons and give their symbols.
Model answer
They are the electron, symbol e⁻, and the electron neutrino, symbol νₑ.
- 4
Name the two first-generation quarks and give their symbols.
Model answer
They are the up quark, symbol u, and the down quark, symbol d.
- 5
State the charge of the electron and of the electron neutrino in units of e.
Model answer
The electron carries −1e and the electron neutrino carries no charge at all. In coulombs the electron charge is −1.60 × 10⁻¹⁹ C.
- 6
State the charge of the up quark and of the down quark in units of e.
Model answer
The up quark carries +2/3 e and the down quark carries −1/3 e. Neither is a whole multiple of e.

Every question in Particles and Nuclear Structure, on a schedule.
Attempt a question from memory, write the correct version, then attempt it again. Levo records the jump between your first attempt and your last, and brings each question back on the day you are due to forget it.
