Magnetic flux, flux linkage and the weber
- 3 things to know
- Component 3
Overview
Magnetic flux and unit of flux linkage.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
What is the unit of magnetic flux, and how is it related to the tesla?
When is the flux through a coil a maximum?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Define magnetic flux.
Model answer
Magnetic flux is the product of the magnetic flux density and the area presented at right angles to it. For a plane area in a uniform field it is the flux density times the area times the cosine of the angle between the field and the normal to that area.
- 2
State the equation for the magnetic flux through a plane coil, defining each symbol and its unit.
Model answer
The equation is Φ = BA cosθ. Φ is the magnetic flux in Wb, B the flux density in T, A the area in m² and θ the angle between the field and the normal to the plane of the coil.
- 3
What is the unit of magnetic flux, and how is it related to the tesla?
Model answer
The unit is the weber, symbol Wb. One weber is one tesla metre squared, so 1 Wb = 1 T m².
- 4
When is the flux through a coil a maximum?
Model answer
The flux is greatest when the field lies along the normal to the coil, so θ = 0 and cosθ = 1. The plane of the coil is then at right angles to the field.
- 5
When is the flux through a coil zero?
Model answer
The flux is zero when the field lies in the plane of the coil, so θ = 90° and cosθ = 0. No field lines then pass through the coil at all.
- 6
Define magnetic flux linkage.
Model answer
Magnetic flux linkage is the flux through one turn of a coil multiplied by the number of turns. It is written NΦ.
