Particles and Nuclear Structure
The four fundamental interactions
- 3 things to know
- Component 3
Overview
Recall questions on naming the four forces and their exchange particles, which particles feel each, their relative strengths and ranges, which force is responsible for beta decay and why only it can change quark flavour, and why gravity dominates on the astronomical scale.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Which particles experience the gravitational interaction, and what is its range?
Which particles experience the electromagnetic interaction, and what is its range?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Name the four fundamental interactions.
Model answer
They are the gravitational, weak, electromagnetic and strong interactions. Every process in nature is governed by one or more of them.
- 2
Which particles experience the gravitational interaction, and what is its range?
Model answer
All matter experiences it, and its range is infinite. It is by far the weakest of the four.
- 3
Why is gravity negligible in particle physics?
Model answer
It is extremely feeble compared with the other interactions and the masses of particles are minute. It becomes significant only between very large objects such as planets and stars.
- 4
Which particles experience the electromagnetic interaction, and what is its range?
Model answer
All charged particles experience it, and its range is infinite. Neutral hadrons feel it too, because they are built from charged quarks.
- 5
Which particles experience the strong interaction, and what is its range?
Model answer
All quarks experience it, and so therefore do all hadrons. Its range is short, of the order of nuclear dimensions.
- 6
Which particles experience the weak interaction, and what is its range?
Model answer
All leptons and all quarks experience it, so all hadrons do as well. Its range is very short indeed, shorter than that of the strong interaction.

What is inside Levo
Six ways to work the same material.
Every question in Particles and Nuclear Structure, on a schedule.
Attempt a question from memory, write the correct version, then attempt it again. Levo records the jump between your first attempt and your last, and brings each question back on the day you are due to forget it.
