The uniform field between the plates and E = V/d
- 3 things to know
- Component 2
Overview
Recall questions on how a uniform field is produced and what uniform means, E = V/d, the two equivalent units for field strength, worked calculations of field strength and of the force on a charge, and why the field distorts at the edges.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Describe the electric field in the region between the plates of a charged parallel plate capacitor.
What happens to the field strength between two parallel plates if the potential difference is doubled at fixed separation?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Describe the electric field in the region between the plates of a charged parallel plate capacitor.
Model answer
The field is uniform, meaning it has the same magnitude and direction everywhere between the plates, apart from a slight spreading at the edges.
- 2
State the equation for the field strength between parallel plates, defining every symbol and its unit.
Model answer
The equation is E = V/d, where E is the electric field strength in V m⁻¹, V is the potential difference between the plates in volts and d is their separation in metres.
- 3
What happens to the field strength between two parallel plates if the potential difference is doubled at fixed separation?
Model answer
The field strength doubles, because E = V/d is directly proportional to the potential difference when the separation is unchanged.
- 4
Show that V m⁻¹ and N C⁻¹ are the same unit.
Model answer
A volt is a joule per coulomb, so V m⁻¹ is J C⁻¹ m⁻¹. Since a joule is a newton metre, that becomes N m C⁻¹ m⁻¹, and the metres cancel to leave N C⁻¹.
- 5
In which direction does the field between charged parallel plates point?
Model answer
It points straight across the gap from the positive plate to the negative plate, at right angles to the plates.
- 6
Calculate the field strength between two plates 2.0 mm apart with 200 V across them.
Model answer
The field strength is E = 200 ÷ (2.0 × 10⁻³) = 1.0 × 10⁵ V m⁻¹, directed from the positive plate to the negative plate. Multiplying 1.0 × 10⁵ V m⁻¹ by 2.0 × 10⁻³ m returns the 200 V given.
