Using Radiation to Investigate Stars
Black bodies and the black body spectrum
- 3 things to know
- Component 2
Overview
Black body and relationship defining absolute temperature in terms of the Celsius scale.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Define a black body.
What is meant by a black body spectrum?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Define a black body.
Model answer
A black body is a body that absorbs all the radiation incident on it, whatever its wavelength.
- 2
Why are stars treated as black bodies?
Model answer
A star absorbs essentially all the radiation falling on it and its emission follows the black body curve closely, so it is a very good approximation to a black body.
- 3
What is meant by a black body spectrum?
Model answer
A black body spectrum is the distribution of emitted power over wavelength that a perfect absorber radiates, determined by nothing but its absolute temperature.
- 4
Describe the shape of a black body spectrum.
Model answer
The curve rises steeply from zero at very short wavelengths to a single maximum and then falls away more gradually towards long wavelengths, never returning quite to zero.
- 5
What quantity alone determines the shape of a black body curve?
Model answer
The absolute temperature of the body determines the whole curve, and nothing about the material it is made of enters into it.
- 6
How does the black body curve change when the temperature of the body is increased?
Model answer
The whole curve rises, so more power is emitted at every wavelength, and the peak moves to a shorter wavelength.
