Lasers
Two, three and four level systems
- 3 things to know
- Component 3
Overview
Limiting condition in a two-level system called, how a population inversion is achieved in a three-level system and how a population inversion is achieved in a four-level system.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Why is a population inversion usually impossible in a two-level energy system?
Why must more than half the atoms be pumped in a three-level system?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Why is a population inversion usually impossible in a two-level energy system?
Model answer
The same photon energy both excites atoms upwards and stimulates them downwards, so at best the two populations become equal and the upper one can never exceed the lower.
- 2
Describe how a population inversion is achieved in a three-level system.
Model answer
Atoms are pumped from the ground state to a short-lived upper level, from which they decay rapidly into a metastable level, where they accumulate until that level holds more atoms than the ground state.
- 3
Between which two levels does the laser transition occur in a three-level system?
Model answer
Between the metastable level and the ground state.
- 4
Why must more than half the atoms be pumped in a three-level system?
Model answer
The lower laser level is the ground state, which starts full, so the metastable level can only exceed it once more than half the atoms have been raised out of it.
- 5
What practical difficulty does that create?
Model answer
A great deal of pumping power is needed, which makes a three-level laser inefficient and often limits it to pulsed operation.
- 6
Describe how a population inversion is achieved in a four-level system.
Model answer
Atoms are pumped to a short-lived upper level, decay quickly into a metastable level, lase down to a fourth level above the ground state, and then decay rapidly from there back to the ground state.

Six ways to work the same material.
Every question in Lasers, on a schedule.
Attempt a question from memory, write the correct version, then attempt it again. Levo records the jump between your first attempt and your last, and brings each question back on the day you are due to forget it.
