Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What force acts on an ion beam passing through a uniform electric field, and what path does the beam follow?
Model answer
The force is F = qE, constant in size and always in the same direction, so it acts on the beam much as gravity acts on a projectile. A beam entering at right angles to the field follows a parabolic path.
- 2
What path does an ion beam follow in a uniform magnetic field entered at right angles to the field?
Model answer
It follows a circular arc. The force stays perpendicular to the velocity, so it turns the direction of motion without changing the speed.
- 3
Give the essential difference between the effect of an electric field and that of a magnetic field on a moving charge.
Model answer
An electric field exerts a force along the field direction whatever the particle is doing, and it changes the speed. A magnetic field exerts a force at right angles to the velocity, so it changes only the direction.
- 4
What is a velocity selector, and how does it work?
Model answer
A velocity selector sends an ion beam through crossed electric and magnetic fields arranged so that their forces oppose each other. Only particles for which qE = Bqv pass straight through the exit slit, so the emerging beam has the single speed v = E/B.
- 5
Calculate the speed selected by crossed fields of 4.0 × 10⁴ V m⁻¹ and 0.020 T.
Model answer
v = E/B = 4.0 × 10⁴/0.020 = 2.0 × 10⁶ m s⁻¹. Multiplying 2.0 × 10⁶ m s⁻¹ by 0.020 T returns an electric field strength of 4.0 × 10⁴ V m⁻¹.
- 6
Why does a velocity selector work for ions of any charge and mass?
Model answer
The charge cancels when the electric and magnetic forces are set equal, leaving E = vB. The selected speed therefore depends only on the two field strengths.
