Tangents, areas under curves and logarithmic plots
- 3 things to know
- All three components
Overview
Plotted to turn a capacitor discharge into a straight line and plotted to turn a radioactive decay into a straight line.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
How is the area under a curved graph estimated when no formula applies?
A log-log plot of the period of a planet's orbit against its orbital radius has a gradient of 1.50. State the power law this implies.
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What does the gradient of a tangent to a displacement-time curve represent?
Model answer
It represents the instantaneous velocity at that moment, in m s⁻¹. The tangent gives the rate of change at a single point rather than over an interval.
- 2
Distinguish between the mean velocity and the instantaneous velocity of a body over a journey.
Model answer
The mean velocity is the total displacement divided by the total time, which is the gradient of the chord joining the two ends of the curve. The instantaneous velocity is the gradient of the tangent at one particular moment and can differ greatly from it.
- 3
How is the gradient of a tangent estimated from a curved graph?
Model answer
A straight line is placed touching the curve at the point of interest so that it just grazes it, and the gradient of that line is found from a large triangle. The chief uncertainty lies in judging where the line truly touches the curve.
- 4
What does the area under a velocity-time graph represent?
Model answer
It represents the displacement of the body, in metres. Area below the time axis counts as displacement in the opposite direction.
- 5
A velocity-time graph rises in a straight line from 4.0 m s⁻¹ to 22.0 m s⁻¹ over 6.0 s. Calculate the displacement in that time.
Model answer
The area is a trapezium of value ½(4.0 + 22.0) × 6.0 = 78 m. Checking with s = ut + ½at², 4.0 × 6.0 + ½ × 3.0 × 36 = 24 + 54 = 78 m.
- 6
What does the area under a graph of force against extension represent?
Model answer
It represents the work done in stretching the object, which for an elastic material is the elastic potential energy stored. The unit is the joule.
