Work done by a gas
- 3 things to know
- Component 1
Overview
Why work is described as energy in transit and sign of W when a gas is compressed.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Derive W = pΔV for a gas pushing back a piston of area A through a distance d.
Show that pΔV has the units of energy.
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Explain why work is described as energy in transit.
Model answer
Work only exists while a force is moving something across the boundary of a system, so it describes a transfer of energy rather than anything the system contains.
- 2
State the equation for the work done by a gas expanding at constant pressure, defining every symbol and its unit.
Model answer
The equation is W = pΔV, where W is the work done by the gas in J, p is the constant pressure in Pa and ΔV is the increase in volume in m³.
- 3
Derive W = pΔV for a gas pushing back a piston of area A through a distance d.
Model answer
The gas exerts a force F = pA on the piston, so the work done is Fd = pAd. The product Ad is the increase in volume, so the work done is pΔV.
- 4
Show that pΔV has the units of energy.
Model answer
Pressure has base units kg m⁻¹ s⁻² and volume m³, so the product is kg m² s⁻², the base units of the joule.
- 5
A gas at a constant 1.00 × 10⁵ Pa expands by 2.00 × 10⁻³ m³. Calculate the work done by the gas.
Model answer
The work done is 1.00 × 10⁵ × 2.00 × 10⁻³ = 200 J by the gas on its surroundings. Dividing 200 J by 1.00 × 10⁵ Pa returns 2.00 × 10⁻³ m³.
- 6
What is the sign of W when a gas is compressed, and what does the sign mean?
Model answer
The volume change is negative so W is negative, meaning work is done on the gas by the surroundings rather than by the gas.
