Free oscillation and damping
- 3 things to know
- Component 1
Overview
Free oscillation, natural frequency of an oscillating system and shape of the displacement-time graph for a lightly damped oscillator.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
What is meant by a free oscillation?
Define the natural frequency of an oscillating system.
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is meant by a free oscillation?
Model answer
A free oscillation is one in which a system, once displaced and released, oscillates at its own natural frequency with no external driving force and no energy losses.
- 2
Define the natural frequency of an oscillating system.
Model answer
The natural frequency is the frequency at which a system oscillates freely when it is displaced and released without any driving force.
- 3
What is meant by damping?
Model answer
Damping is the removal of energy from an oscillating system by resistive forces, so that the amplitude of the oscillation decreases with time.
- 4
Where does the energy lost from a damped oscillator go?
Model answer
The energy is transferred to internal energy of the oscillator and its surroundings, and a little is carried away as sound.
- 5
Describe the shape of the displacement-time graph for a lightly damped oscillator.
Model answer
The graph shows an oscillation of essentially unchanged period whose peaks decrease steadily, with the peak values falling away along a decaying exponential envelope.
- 6
How does light damping affect the period of an oscillation?
Model answer
Light damping leaves the period almost unchanged, lengthening it only very slightly while the amplitude falls.
