Overview
Equation for the Larmor frequency of a proton, resonance in the context of magnetic resonance imaging and relaxation time measured in magnetic resonance imaging.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Compare ultrasound, X-ray and magnetic resonance imaging for examining a soft tissue injury in a knee.
Explain what is meant by the precession of a nucleus in a magnetic field.
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Which nuclei are used in medical magnetic resonance imaging, and why?
Model answer
Hydrogen nuclei, which are single protons, are used. They are extremely abundant in the water and fat of the body and have a large magnetic moment, so they give a strong signal.
- 2
Explain what is meant by the precession of a nucleus in a magnetic field.
Model answer
A nucleus with spin behaves as a small magnet with angular momentum, so an applied field exerts a torque that makes its axis sweep out a cone about the field direction. This wobbling motion about the field is precession.
- 3
State the equation for the Larmor frequency of a proton.
Model answer
The Larmor frequency is f = 42.6 × 10⁶ B, where B is the applied flux density in T and f is in Hz. The constant is the gyromagnetic ratio of the proton expressed in Hz T⁻¹.
- 4
Calculate the Larmor frequency of protons in a 1.5 T scanner.
Model answer
f = 42.6 × 10⁶ × 1.5 = 6.4 × 10⁷ Hz, which is 64 MHz. Working back, 6.39 × 10⁷/42.6 × 10⁶ = 1.5 T.
- 5
A magnetic resonance scanner operates at a proton frequency of 21.3 MHz. Calculate the flux density of its main field.
Model answer
Rearranging gives B = f/(42.6 × 10⁶) = 2.13 × 10⁷/4.26 × 10⁷ = 0.500 T. Working back, 42.6 × 10⁶ × 0.500 = 2.13 × 10⁷ Hz.
- 6
What is meant by resonance in the context of magnetic resonance imaging?
Model answer
Resonance occurs when a radio frequency pulse is applied at exactly the Larmor frequency of the precessing protons. Energy is then absorbed efficiently and the protons are flipped into a higher energy alignment.
