Key term

Why does a natural language system need to take account of context?

Questions from this subtopic

Each one with the model answer underneath.

  1. 1

What is a natural language interface?

    Model answer

A natural language interface lets a user type or speak a request in ordinary English instead of in commands or a query language, leaving the system to work out what was meant.

  2. 2

Describe the main stages of natural language processing.

    Model answer

Natural language processing tokenises the input into words, performs lexical analysis to identify each word, performs syntactic analysis to establish the grammatical structure, and performs semantic analysis to determine the meaning.

  3. 3

    What does tokenisation do?

    Model answer

Tokenisation splits a stream of text into individual words and punctuation marks so that each one can be looked up and analysed separately.

  4. 4

What is a lexicon in a language processing system?

    Model answer

A lexicon is the system's dictionary, holding every word it knows together with the part of speech and the possible meanings of each.

  5. 5

    Explain what parsing achieves.

    Model answer

Parsing works out the grammatical structure of a sentence, identifying the subject, the verb and the object, so the system knows what is acting on what.

  6. 6

    What is semantic analysis?

    Model answer

Semantic analysis assigns meaning to a parsed sentence, choosing which sense of each word is intended and building a representation of the request that the system can act on.
