Questions from this subtopic

Each one with the model answer underneath.

  1. 1

What is an overall system design?

    Model answer

An overall system design is the top-level plan of the solution, showing its main components, what each is for, and how they fit together, before any of them is described in detail.

  2. 2

What should the overall design show?

    Model answer

The overall design shows the modules or subsystems, the data the system holds, the interfaces between the modules, the points at which the system exchanges data with anything outside it, and the navigation a user follows between them.

  3. 3

Why is a system broken into modules?

    Model answer

Modules let a large problem be tackled in parts, tested separately, worked on by more than one person, and changed later without disturbing the rest, provided each module has one clear job and a defined interface.

  4. 4

What is meant by a module having one clear job?

    Model answer

A module with one job does a single identifiable thing, such as producing renewal letters, so its purpose can be stated in a sentence and a change to that task affects only that module.

  5. 5

What is a system flowchart, and how does it differ from a data flow diagram?

    Model answer

A system flowchart shows the sequence of operations and the media used, including manual steps and physical documents. A data flow diagram shows only where data goes and says nothing about order.

  6. 6

    What is a structure chart?

    Model answer

A structure chart shows the modules of a system arranged in a hierarchy, with a controlling module above and the modules it calls beneath it, and the data passed between them marked on the connections.
