Questions from this subtopic

Each one with the model answer underneath.

  1. 1

What has to be in place before a system goes live?

    Model answer

Before going live the system must be installed and tested in its live environment, the existing data transferred and verified, the users trained, the documentation delivered, the backup arrangements working, and the fallback plan agreed.

  2. 2

Why is the backup arrangement tested before going live rather than after?

    Model answer

A backup that has never been restored is not known to work, and a client discovers the fault at the only moment it matters. Restoring a test copy before going live is what proves the arrangement.

  3. 3

What is a pilot, and what does it achieve?

    Model answer

A pilot runs the new system for one part of the organisation while the rest continues as before. It exposes the system to real work and real users at a scale where problems can be absorbed, before the whole organisation depends on it.

  4. 4

What is the drawback of running the old and new systems side by side?

    Model answer

Running both means every transaction is entered twice, which doubles the workload for the period and needs staff the organisation may not have, so it buys safety at a cost that is not always affordable.

  5. 5

Why is a period of close support planned immediately after going live?

    Model answer

The first days generate almost all of the questions and reveal the problems that testing missed, so having someone available then resolves them before they become habits or workarounds.

  6. 6

    What is corrective maintenance?

    Model answer

Corrective maintenance is work done to fix faults found after the system is in use, which are almost always ones the tests did not cover rather than ones they missed.
