Specifying hardware and software requirements
- 3 things to know
- A2 Unit 2
Overview
Minimum specification and risk of specifying more than the system needs.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Why must licensing be part of the software specification?
How should the specification be justified?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Why does the design stage specify the hardware and software the system needs?
Model answer
The specification tells the client what has to be bought or already available for the solution to run, and it tells the developer what to build against. Leaving it until installation risks a finished system that cannot be deployed.
- 2
What should a hardware specification cover?
Model answer
A hardware specification covers the processor and memory needed, storage capacity, the input and output devices, any network equipment, and any specialised peripheral such as a barcode scanner or receipt printer.
- 3
How is the storage requirement of a database system estimated?
Model answer
The size of one record is estimated from the sizes of its fields, multiplied by the expected number of records, and then multiplied again by the expected growth over the system's life, with an allowance added for indexes and backups.
- 4
Why is expected growth included in a storage estimate?
Model answer
A system sized only for today's data runs out of room during its working life, and enlarging storage on a live system is more disruptive and more expensive than providing for the growth at the start.
- 5
What should a software specification cover?
Model answer
A software specification covers the operating system, the database management system or development package, any runtime the solution needs, and any additional software required for reporting, security or backup.
- 6
What is a minimum specification, and why is a recommended one also given?
Model answer
A minimum specification is what the system needs to run at all; a recommended specification is what it needs to run acceptably under real load. Quoting only the minimum leads to a system that technically works and is unusably slow.

Every question in The Development Project: Analysis and Design, on a schedule.
Attempt a question from memory, write the correct version, then attempt it again. Levo records the jump between your first attempt and your last, and brings each question back on the day you are due to forget it.
