What is a cache miss, and what follows one?

Key term

Explain why copying an item into cache usually pays off.

Questions from this subtopic

Each one with the model answer underneath.

  1. 1

    What is cache memory?

    Model answer

Cache memory is a small block of very fast memory that holds copies of the instructions and values the processor has used most recently.

  2. 2

Why does a processor need cache at all?

    Model answer

A processor can work far faster than main memory can supply it, so without a nearer and quicker store it would spend much of its time waiting.

  3. 3

    What is a cache hit?

    Model answer

A cache hit occurs when the item the processor asks for is already held in cache and can be supplied without any trip to main memory.

  4. 4

What is a cache miss, and what follows one?

    Model answer

A cache miss occurs when the required item is not in cache, so the item is fetched from main memory and a copy is placed in cache in case it is wanted again.

  5. 5

Explain why copying an item into cache usually pays off.

    Model answer

Programs reuse the same instructions in loops and work steadily through neighbouring addresses, so an item just used is very likely to be needed again shortly.

  6. 6

Describe the difference between level 1 and level 2 cache.

    Model answer

Level 1 cache is the smallest and fastest and sits on the processor core itself, while level 2 cache is larger and a little slower to reach.
